The Selling of Civil Rights: The Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee and the Use of Public Relations (Studies in African American History and Culture) Feature

The Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee formed in April 1960 to advance civil rights. With a tremendous human rights mission facing them, the founding SNCC members included communication and publicity as part of their initial purpose. This book provides a broad overview of these efforts from SNCC's birth in 1960 until the beginning of its demise in the late 1960s and examines the communication tools that SNCC leaders and members used to organize, launch, and carry out their campaign to promote civil rights throughout the 1960s. It specifically explores how SNCC workers used public relations to support and promote their platforms and to build a grassroots community movement; and how the organization later rejected these strategies for a radical and isolated approach.

The Planned Economies and International Economic Organizations (Cambridge Russian, Soviet and Post-Soviet Studies)

The Planned Economies and International Economic Organizations (Cambridge Russian, Soviet and Post-Soviet Studies) Review

The Planned Economies and International Economic Organizations (Cambridge Russian, Soviet and Post-Soviet Studies) Feature

This is the first comprehensive study of the role of socialist countries within the international economic order. The author presents an overview of the emergence of the postwar economic order and examines the key features of three kinds of centrally planned economies. He then analyzes the role of financial frameworks and the international trade system in ensuring smooth economic relations among market-type economies and he details the problems of associating typical CPEs within them. Finally Jozef van Brabant explores the possibility of reconstituting a multilateral economic order that can provide greater security, predictability, stability and reliability in international economic relations. The Planned Economies and International Economic Organizations is written at a time when the Soviet Union and other centrally planned economies are seeking closer links with the mainstream world economy. It will therefore be of interest to governments and institutional economists as well as to students and specialists of Soviet and East European studies, international relations and comparative economics.

Born in the U. S. A.: The Myths of America in Popular Music from Colonial Times to the Present (Studies in Popular Culture) Feature

This is the first study to explore fully the myth of America as reflected in the nation's popular music. Beginning with the songs of the Pilgrims and continuing through more than two centuries of history and music, Born in the U.S.A. shows the emerging American myth and gives a close reading of the compositions of songwriters as diverse as William Billings, Henry Clay Work, Irving Berlin, Woody Guthrie, Bob Dylan, and Bruce Springsteen.

So that the full and diverse narrative of this complex nation might be recorded, this insightful study is focused both upon the national myth and upon the songwriters and performers representing subcultures and alternative viewpoints that are the text of America's story. Through hymnlike paeans and through discordant lamentations protesting the realities of the contemporary workaday world, popular music is an astonishing mirror of American history.

Hollywood's Frontier Captives: Cultural Anxiety and the Captivity Plot in American Film (Studies in American Popular History and Culture) Feature

The captivity narrative is the earliest genre of American popular literature and continues to be of cultural significance in late 20th century Hollywood. This book contains essays which explore the way contemporary films incorporate the same elements and also offer something new to the tradition - they focus on the captive who resists rescue. Films as diverse as Little Big Man , taxi Driver , and The Deer Hunter are used as examples which adapted the captivity narrative's conventions to criticize aspects of American society and reject the outworn models of male heroism.

Military Reform: An Uneven History and an Uncertain Future (Stanford Security Studies)

Military Reform: An Uneven History and an Uncertain Future (Stanford Security Studies) Review

Military Reform: An Uneven History and an Uncertain Future (Stanford Security Studies) Feature

By reference to the fundamental strengths and weaknesses of America's armed forces, Wheeler and Korb establish a definition of what genuine military reform is and is not, and identify what really needs to be done to transform our military. They compare genuine reform with "cosmetic dabbling"—that improves nothing and often burdens US combat forces to the point of mental and physical immobility.

They focus particularly on the reforms advocated by a small group in Congress and the Pentagon in the 1980s, revealing how these reforms have fundamentally altered the ways in which the Department of Defense designs and buys hardware, and how our armed forces fight. The book uses Operations Desert Storm and Iraqi Freedom—and the subsequent insurgency in Iraq—to demonstrate what has been reformed in the US armed forces and the Department of Defense, and what has not.

The Retreat of the State: The Diffusion of Power in the World Economy (Cambridge Studies in International Relations) Feature

Who is really in charge of the world economy? Not only governments, argues Susan Strange in The Retreat of the State. Big businesses, drug barons, insurers, accountants and international bureaucrats all encroach on the so-called sovereignty of the state. Professor Strange examines the implications of this rivalry and points to some new directions for research in international relations, international business and economics.

The Politics of Space Security: Strategic Restraint and the Pursuit of National Interests (Stanford Security Studies)

The Politics of Space Security: Strategic Restraint and the Pursuit of National Interests (Stanford Security Studies) Review

The Politics of Space Security: Strategic Restraint and the Pursuit of National Interests (Stanford Security Studies) Feature

At a time when no other country enjoys the advantages that the United States currently reaps from space, some U.S. officials argue that U.S. space defenses will be needed to protect access to critical military and civilian assets in orbit. Others argue that space should be a valuable "sanctuary" from deployed weapons and military conflict.

To inform this debate—and develop meaningful guidelines for the future—Clay Moltz has undertaken the only comprehensive study of the first 50 years of space security, highlighting the main trends in military space developments, their underlying causes, and the factors that are likely to influence their future course.

What emerges is a picture of surprising military restraint shown by the United States and the Soviet Union in space, and the inescapable conclusion that the only way forward is through a multilateral commitment to interdependent, environmentally focused space security.
