The Planned Economies and International Economic Organizations (Cambridge Russian, Soviet and Post-Soviet Studies) Feature

This is the first comprehensive study of the role of socialist countries within the international economic order. The author presents an overview of the emergence of the postwar economic order and examines the key features of three kinds of centrally planned economies. He then analyzes the role of financial frameworks and the international trade system in ensuring smooth economic relations among market-type economies and he details the problems of associating typical CPEs within them. Finally Jozef van Brabant explores the possibility of reconstituting a multilateral economic order that can provide greater security, predictability, stability and reliability in international economic relations. The Planned Economies and International Economic Organizations is written at a time when the Soviet Union and other centrally planned economies are seeking closer links with the mainstream world economy. It will therefore be of interest to governments and institutional economists as well as to students and specialists of Soviet and East European studies, international relations and comparative economics.

Hot and Cold Running War Review

Hot and Cold Running War Feature

A petty criminal, John Anthony Walker Jr. is somehow accepted into the US Navy in 1955. A judge believes the navy might make a man out of Walker-but the judge is wrong. In 1964, Walker begins selling secrets to the Russians, including plans on how America intend to respond with nuclear weapons if World War III begins between Russia and the United States. With this information, Russia could sink all of America's subs before they launched their nuclear warheads and could destroy most of the B-52 bombers before they reach their target. With an interest in radios and experience speaking Russian, another young American man, Samuel Adams Mortmain, joins the navy in 1962. He eventually earns the responsibility of helping the National Security Agency in its counter-intelligence efforts, looking for spies and dealing with KGB agents-a position that places him in danger. Hot and Cold Running War presents a fictionalized account of the Cold War between America, China, and Russia, in which KGB agents and NSA agents battle each other with surveillance technology, espionage, politics, and small-scale wars. A story with an improbable romance, it shows that even antagonists can join forces when fighting a common enemy.

Aids: Webster's Timeline History, 1962

Aids: Webster's Timeline History, 1962 Review

Aids: Webster's Timeline History, 1962 Feature

Webster's bibliographic and event-based timelines are comprehensive in scope, covering virtually all topics, geographic locations and people. They do so from a linguistic point of view, and in the case of this book, the focus is on "Aids," including when used in literature (e.g. all authors that might have Aids in their name). As such, this book represents the largest compilation of timeline events associated with Aids when it is used in proper noun form. Webster's timelines cover bibliographic citations, patented inventions, as well as non-conventional and alternative meanings which capture ambiguities in usage. These furthermore cover all parts of speech (possessive, institutional usage, geographic usage) and contexts, including pop culture, the arts, social sciences (linguistics, history, geography, economics, sociology, political science), business, computer science, literature, law, medicine, psychology, mathematics, chemistry, physics, biology and other physical sciences. This "data dump" results in a comprehensive set of entries for a bibliographic and/or event-based timeline on the proper name Aids, since editorial decisions to include or exclude events is purely a linguistic process. The resulting entries are used under license or with permission, used under "fair use" conditions, used in agreement with the original authors, or are in the public domain.

THE WORLD'S LISTS OF BEST AND WORST Review

THE WORLD'S LISTS OF BEST AND WORST Feature

If you are a list fanatic, this book is for you. The author is in a privileged position to write the book and compile all those lists. Maximillien de Lafayette has traveled through forty-six countries. He is fluent in seven languages, and the author of numerous books. The lists are not generated solely by Mr. De Lafayette. They are a prism of global opinions, scholarly research, essays, polls, and surveys, by the world media and various journalists, as well as the general public. The commentaries are all by the author, though, and they are priceless and opinionated as his work always is, intelligent, and sparkling with wit. The book has just about every list you can wish for. It spans politics, war, art, literature, entertainment, nations, ethnicity, and gender. Ideas, mistakes, customs, and funny events, mix up with Nobel Prize winners and the most hated people in history.

Shiver: the life and times of a serial marrier

Shiver: the life and times of a serial marrier Review

Shiver: the life and times of a serial marrier Feature

This is a rollicking novel about marriage in America with epic depictions of bad weather and even worse human behavior [adult situations, language, sexual content]. It is the story of a man who not only loved women but married twelve of them. It is also a chronicle of America; and like the last half of the 20th century, it is a wild ride with our matrimonial hero circumnavigating the country and having adventures you could only hope to imagine and pray to avoid. Alternately shocking, funny, radical, literary, and religious (while only occasionally sad in the tradition of Tom Jones and Moll Flanders), this virtuoso first novel reinvents the picaresque entertainments popularized by Henry Fielding and Daniel Defoe. So put away your other novels of Scandinavian sorrow and introduce yourself to a new American author.
